Celebrating American Christmas in Australia

Despite the absence of snow and the fact it is middle of summer when we have our Christmas in Australia, what makes American Christmas so different? I don’t think it is that different: it’s celebrated on 25th December, we listen to the same music, we give presents, Santa and his reindeer come and visit the good children and we put up Christmas trees and decorations.

Well there are a few subtle differences and one that I wish we have more of in Australia is Christmas themed food. I know we have some but I want more than just red and green M&Ms and Bundaberg Spiced Ginger Beer. And cooler weather to wear ugly Christmas sweaters. And Hallmark Christmas Movies on a dedicated channel or app. Well we get Hallmark Christmas Movies, but we don’t get the 24/7 Hallmark Christmas movies from October that is available in America. Ugly Christmas Sweater Parties

Anyone can throw an Ugly Christmas Sweater party. There is no blueprint that you must follow. Except one thing – you have to wear an Ugly Christmas Sweater. Hard to do in Australia when it is 30+ degrees Celsius outside. But there are some places in Australia that sell Ugly Christmas Sweaters – or Jumpers so crank up that air conditioning and have a party!

Family Christmas PJs

Matching family Christmas PJs are becoming easier to find. Here are where I’ve spotted them in Australia. I’ve included where to get Christmas PJs, not necessarily matching but still festive.

Peter Alexander – a couple of different ranges of matching PJs including something for the fur baby of the family.
Kmart – have a range of Christmas PJs for parents and kids. Not matching for the family.
Big W – have matching Family PJs! Quite a good range. There is Bluey, Mickey, Grinch and another couple of different designs.

Elf on the Shelf

Elf on the Shelf did originate in the US but is known the world over including here in Australia. Here is where you can get the Elf and accessories. I’ve only included the actual original Elf but many other stores sell off brands. (Including Elves Behavin’ Badly which is actually a company from UK)

Disney

Disney has amazing Christmas items and this year we are lucky enough to have some options on where to buy Disney Christmas themed products. I am really impressed with the different items available and be sure to be quick to purchase these and I think they’ll go super fast.

Coles – Coles has the goods this Christmas. They have Disney themed Hallmark Collectables, Disney Christmas dinnerware and table decorations.
Target – Target has really upped the Disney game this Christmas. They have a Disney tree skirt available, decorations, stockings, advent calendar, wrapping paper, plush toys and t-shirts.
Kmart – Kmart has a range of Disney Christmas items available like plates, glasses, mugs, wrapping paper, decorations and Advent calendar.
Big W – Big W has Disney Christmas activity books, decorations, snow globe, bags, wrapping paper, decorations including a Mickey tree topper, t-shirts and PJs.
Woolworths – Woolworths have Disney Christmas decorations, mugs, photo frames, snow globes, bon bons, cookie jars, tea towels, Advent calendars, plates and a cushion.

I am obsessed with the red trucks that is everywhere in the States around Christmas time. I am glad that they have made more of an appearance here in Australia over the past couple of years. They are easier to find here nowadays.

TK Maxx – Hands down TK Maxx is the best place to get American inspired decorations including red trucks. They also have christmas themed bedding.
Myer – they have a few red truck decorations
Amazon Australia – have a few red truck items, this Lego set which looks cool and this decor sign which is sweet.
Kmart – they have a few different red truck decorations as well as wintery type decorations and for a great price.
